The New Institute, the Netherlands’ new national institute for the creative industry, invited The Mobile City to help it develop an ongoing dialogue around the concept of smart cities between Chinese and Dutch architects, media makers and designers.

The program Made By Us explores the role of digital media in ‘city-making’ – the complex process by which institutions, architects, designers and citizens bring their cities into being. The specific focus was on the role of digital media in the repurposing of industrial heritage sites.

Made By Us takes place in three stages.

1) First, the program was launched during the Beijing Design Week 2013 in partnership with the China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts (CMoDA). The program featured an interdisciplinary symposium, an exhibition and a two-day workshop with Dutch and Chinese experts. Read more about Made By Us in Beijing here >>

There, the Dutch artists and media designers Niki Smit (Monobanda), Sander Veenhof and Mark van der Net worked together with Chinese and international designers to conceive of new media interventions for the Shougang Capital Steel Factory in Beijing.

2) In the second stage the media makers further developed their ideas in a series of expert meetings and public presentations in The Netherlands.

3) In the third stage they adapted their ideas to the context of the former Guangdong Float Glass Factory, the site of the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture in Shenzhen. There, the final exhibition and performances of the installations are taking place on December 7 and December 8 2013.
