Round N Around Design Lab setup
See here for the full call and project webpage
The participants of Round N Around Design Lab will be invited to collectively think of solutions towards better biking conditions for the future. On 25th of September, we realised a workshop where we mapped the challenges and opportunities of our biking culture on our regular biking routes. Now, using approaches of persuasive design, tactical urbanism and storytelling in public space, in a Design Lab we will develop concepts to address the issues mapped for establishing a more welcoming culture for cyclists in São Paulo.
What participants will get out of it
Participants will work in small interdisciplinary groups to develop ideas and prototypes that address the themes of the design lab. They will receive input and feedback from a team of Brazilian and international tutors. The outcomes of the design lab will be publicly presented at the closing event, and be published in an official publication documenting the Round N Around project, listing participants as chapter authors. Upon completion of the design lab, participants will receive a certificate of participation, given out by Het Nieuwe Instituut in the Netherlands.
Whom should apply?
We are looking for designers (visual design, social design, persuasive design, service design, etc); people working with data, data visualization, internet of things; people with background in urban studies & planning (policy makers, urban sociologists & geographers, planners, tactical urbanists, urban designers); and members of the biking community. Participants can be professionals working in this field; advanced level students (final year BA / MA / PhD) or researchers and programme organizers working at universities, ngo’s or other institutions. How to apply Deadline for subscription is October 24th. Selection of participants will be made based on motivation, experiences they can bring to the design lab, and complementary of skills and backgrounds in relation to other design lab participants. Participants will be notified of acceptance by October 28th.

Along the four day event, welcome coffee, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided to the group.
Programme:
1. Round N Around Design Lab (Nov 7th – Nov 10th)
A hands-on design lab led by researchers from the Citizen Data Lab and Inovalab, and facilitated by local practitioners. During the four day design lab, participants will design prototypes of various kinds that could promote the bikeability of São Paulo, from cycling maps to health apps, and from tactical urbanism interventions or public space storytelling and social media campaigns to bring out the issue of the bikeable city to both policy makers and the public at large. Starting point will be the road map for better biking developed in the first design lab. Round N Around Design Lab is closed to a group of 20 participants. Each participant will receive a certificate and will be credited as co-authors of chapters of a bilingual publication about the design process, which will be published by December 2016 / January 2017.
2. Conferences:
Urban Tactics and Appropriation of Public Space (Nov 7th) A conference open to the general public around the theme of urban tactics for citizen empowerment and the promotion of public goods, with a focus on the improvement of the ‘bikeability’ of cities.
3. Round N Around SPTW (Nov 10th) will be closed off on the 10th November with a public presentation of the results of the Design Lab, engaging a wider public with the issue of biking.
