Designing immersive and hybrid spatial interfaces and experiences
Our being and acting in the world is currently being mediated by computing technologies, which may enhance our experience of the physical environment with information and content appropriately mapped onto the environmental stimuli we perceive. More specifically, the convergence of mobile communication, wireless networks, pervasive media and location-based systems may afford hybrid spatial experiences for the urban dweller. Alternatively, virtual, augmented or mixed reality systems may immerse us in immaterial representations of environments, affording rich and engaging audiovisual spatial experiences, through the use of head mounted displays or large-scale projection systems. Additionally, these systems and the experiences they afford may be either personal or social (multi-user).

One of the significant factors which limits the expansion of such spatial interfaces to a wider public has so far been the relative lack of understanding the nature of these enhanced environmental experiences and of the impact that they may have on their users. This presentation will focus on discussing the potential and the challenges towards designing spatial interfaces which are manifested to us in the form of:

  1. Virtual and hybrid immersive spatial experiences
  2. Geo-located databases and/or narratives in a hybridised urban environment, experienced via mobile or wearable displays.

Dimitris Charitos (1965) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens where he teaches the subjects of human-machine communication, interactive design, digital art and visual communication. He holds a PhD in interactive and virtual environments design. As a researcher or coordinator, he has participated in more than 10 research projects (funded by Greek and European programs) on the subjects of virtual reality, locative media, digital art and multimedia. He has more than 80 publications in books, journals and conference proceedings. Starting in 1983, his artistic practice includes electronic music (1983-1993), audiovisual and interactive installations and virtual environments (1997- to the present). He has participated in 15 exhibitions in Greece, the UK and Cyprus.

Dimitris Charitos is one of the organizers of the Hybrid City Conference series. The 3rd edition of the Hybrid City Conference will take place September 17-19 2015 in Athens
