Utrecht University, Faculty of Geosciences and Association Deltametropolis invite you to the International Perspectives: Social Network City. A lecture by Christian Licoppe on the development of Urban Public Places into ‘Hybrid Ecologies’ on Thursday October 13, 2011.

Bernd Fesel Christian Licoppe | is Head of the Social Science Department at Telecom Paristech. In his research on location-aware communities, he studies how, by the availability of locative media and the activity of play, a variety of encounter formats may turn urban public places into ‘hybrid ecologies’.

The fact that Randstad Holland is a nondense conurbation, often forms difficulties for social interaction at a regional scale. The Dutch have a high level of internet accessibility however: in 2009, 90% of the households used the internet (source: Eurostat) and 42% of the Dutch consumers used Smartphones (source: Telecompaper). Internet and online social networks are thus an important part of daily Dutch life.
Several questions that will be discussed are:

  1. Can the use of digital networks stimulate participation and  face-to-face contact?
  2. How do digital networks influence the behaviour in public spaces?
  3. Can digital networks be strategically used in governmental policies for Randstad Holland?
