LECTURE SERIES: The Knight’s Move, Stroom, Den Haag 21/9, 27/10, 24/11 2011

Stroom (Center for Art & Architecture in Den Haag, Netherlands) is organizing what appears to be an interesting series of lectures about the future of architecture and urbanism. “The Knight’s Move” is a series of yearly lectures by eminent international speakers who stand out by their unusual, enlightening and inspirational visions concerning the city, urbanity, the public domain, and community. Just as the knight moves in an atypical and unusual way across the chessboard, Stroom Den Haag likewise wants to cut across all disciplines and thus stimulate rethinking the city.

First speaker on September 21 2011 is Paul Shepheard, writer and lecturer, and author of among others ‘What is Architecture? An Essay on Landscapes, Buildings, and Machines’ (MIT Press, 1994).

Second speaker on October 27 2011 is our friend Mark Shepard, author of ‘Sentient City: ubiquitous computing, architecture and the future of urban space’ (MIT Press, 2011). Shepard researches the influence of new media and network technology on architecture and the city.

Third speaker on November 24 2011 is Andrea Schlieker, curator of the Folkestone Triennial in Great Britain, a highly ambitious project in public space, which aims to engage and inspire the local community. She will talk about the potential of art in public space.
